Rip Frank Navetta Descendents

Frank Navetta passed away on Oct 31. Along with Tony Lombardo and Bill Stevenson, Navetta founded the Descendents in 1979. Soon thereafter the boys roped in smarty pants Milo Aukerman to sing and of course the rest is history. The Descendents were in some ways the imagined ideal of southern California punk.

Halloween Fun Part 2 – The Damned

Friday, October 31st, 2008

Another one from The Mule. The Damned played a special Halloween slot on The Late Show with Craig Ferguson performing Neat Neat Neat. That Captain Sensible can still wail. I guess this makes Craig Ferguson the Irish John Peel.

Treats kids. Its all treats.

Fucked Up Playing 12 Hour CD Release Show at the Rogan Store on Bowery (w/ Moby?!)

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

If you don’t know Fucked-Up you better axe someone. They are pretty much the best active hardcore band right now (sorry Municipal Waste & Government Warning). So good no one cares that they’re Canadian and that says something. They sound like Total Chaos, except good and without the liberty spikes and they occasionally rock gear from our boys Death/Traitors.

Hi I’m Damien, This Is Moby

If you’d never met their lead singer Damien you might think he is one mean-ass-sonofabitch but he’s the chewy nougat center of the punk rock universe™. He is basically the punk-rock-dad version of Captain Lou Albano from the Girls Just Want Wanna Have Fun video, minus the hair.

M.I.A., N*E*R*D & Rye Rye @ Diesel 30th Anniversary Party

Monday, October 13th, 2008

So, try as I might to hate, the Diesel 30th anniversary party was pretty damn awesome. A visibly preggers MIA straight killed it. Her baby bump was covered in so much asymmetrical 80′s-print spandex it looked like a Balzac. The show featured surprise performances from TI, Franz Ferdinand and Chaka Khan. Here’s some live video of MIA’s performance of her single Paper Planes, with Rye Rye and N.E.R.D.

More pictures after the jump.

Diesel is throwing a “Golden Ticket” party Oct. 11th, but you can view the ridiculous “SFW” commercial / promo on YouTube right now. This animation technique is called Rotoscoping and has been used in everything from Who Framed Roger Rabit? to Richard Linklater’s adaptation of A Scanner Darkly.

Friday Afternoon Fun: Take On Me, Stockbauer!

Friday, September 26th, 2008

So, our loyal Admiral Stockbauer flaked at the last minute and the show at The Bell House was left without an MC. Fortunately consummate showman Gibby Haynes stepped up to the plate and introduced the Back CC’s. Thus we must call out our dear old pal, proprietor of the Long Branch Saloon and Scoot Inn in sunny Austin, TX and his Merry Band of Lawyers™.

Take us on, Stockbauer. Take us on.
