“This was incredibly sad and difficult to write. St. Mark’s NYC retail fashion legend Jimmy Webb has passed away.
New York is much more the people than it is the buildings, and Jimmy was eternal. If you had ever worked or even set foot near St. Mark’s in a certain era you saw Jimmy. Jimmy was THE MAYOR. Jimmy was one of the first people to hook us and some of our bands up with clothes. Maybe you were lucky enough to get to know him a little.
There are so many things we associate with the height of the Trash and Vaudeville era of the East Village like the original Continental or Hijiki-Tofu burgers at Dojo. KIM’S! St. Mark’s Comics. But always Jimmy.
We dropped so many flyers for so many shows on that side counter. He had a way of making you feel like he was “in cahoots” with you. Like the two of you could run down the street and rob a bank together… if you just had the right pair of tight pants.
Jimmy is gone but Jimmy, his smile, his breathy laugh, if you ever seen it, it will never really be gone.
Rest in Peace Jimmy…”
